This week I had the opportunity to present at a local school’s career day again, and it makes me think of the way Australian families do (or don’t) engage with their own finances – their goals, the strategy they could map, or whether they realise what options they have in front of them. Like it or not, money impacts us all in life. I find it fascinating to interview the groups and be interviewed by them. I always like to ask if the children think money makes you happy…email me your guess of the rough percentage response, and I’ll let you know. If you’re interested in how to start a productive conversation with your own children, just ask us.

In this edition we discuss What's happening in the global economy, and provide you with information on Sustainable Investing and Wills.

Easing inflation pressures, central banks moving to cut rates and prospects for stronger growth in 2025 should make for okay returns in 2024. However, with growth still slowing, shares historically tending to fall during the initial phase of rate cuts, a very high risk of recession and investors and share market valuations no longer positioned for recession, it’s likely to be a rougher and more constrained ride than in 2023. We expect balanced growth super funds to return around 5.3% this year.

Greetings, and a Happy new (financial) year to our faithful clientele.

On the home front, Carly and I are delighted to be settled in our new home, and we are enjoying business at ACru more than ever before. Our amazing Cru, and of course you – our clients - help with that part.

We love celebrating the wins with each other and with you, and some recent highlights for me include a new arrival for the Simmons family (he’s a real Cru-tie)and some postcards from travelling clients (thank you!) and it prompts me to ask you to write to us and share any recent wins, please.

Financial year 2024 is tracking nicely – one month gone already. I’ve been worried about looming market pain for six months so far, and it’s not yet eventuated – so last year’s returns were happily very strong.

Did you make any new (financial) year's resolutions?

Some ideas, for inspiration, below.

EOFY 2023

With May already here, like me, you might find yourself wondering how the months have zipped past so quickly. Soon we’ll be talking about a new budget, then in a heartbeat we have end of financial year.

With 30/06/2023 falling on a Friday this year, we recommend any payments, transfers or contributions our clients need to make be made prior to Friday the 16th of June to allow sometime for any delays.

In the financial markets, I feel we saw the start of a retraction from the growth bubble caused by COVID...but also an over-reaction to the bad times forecast. Markets dropped, then recovered. My crystal ball (does not exist) thinks things will be shaky for 6-18 months yet, but then if history tells us anything things may pick up again.

Happy New (Financial) Year!

1 July, 2022 - 30 June, 2023

The 1st of July marks the first day of the new financial year!

Some key policy changes that will come into effect as of today are:

- The national minimum wage has increased (now $21.38 an hour)

- Your super has increased.

The superannuation guarantee has increased to 10.5% and will rise 0.5 per cent per year, until it reaches 12% by 2025.

- Business owners - you will now need to pay super for ALL employees, regardless of how much you pay them. This is because the $450-per-month threshold for super guarantee (SG) eligibility is being removed…
